An Introduction to Our Daily Lenten Devotions

by Pastor Ben Greenbaum
Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009
The Christian life should be defined by humility.  Our lives should be defined by the humility of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Jesus’ humble submission to the will of the Father led him, in his final days, to journey into Jerusalem upon the most humble of steeds, a donkey.  As Jesus entered Jerusalem, people lined the street crying out to him, “Hosanna!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!  Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!  Hosanna in the highest!” (Mark 11:9-10)

The people expected the coronation of a king, but Jesus came to receive a crown of thorns. The people expected Jesus to be seated in the comfort of a throne, but Jesus had come to suffer upon the torturous cross.  The people expected Jesus to be treated like a king, but instead he was treated as a criminal.  Jesus knew what awaited him in Jerusalem, and yet he humbly headed to the cross.  He humbly submitted to the Father, he humbly marched to his death.

As Jesus breathed his last breath upon the cross, hope disappeared from the hearts of his followers, but then, miraculously, hope was resurrected as Jesus marched out of the tomb.

The idea behind the Lenten devotions is for us to reconnect to this critical time in our Savior’s life, spanning from his entry into Jerusalem culminating in his victorious resurrection from the dead.  The Lenten devotions will highlight not only these “major moments” mentioned above, but they will also reconnect us with the events, prayers and teachings of Jesus during this time.

As we turn to the pages of scripture during this Lenten season, and reflect upon the life of Jesus, may we be humbled.  May we humbly listen to the words of Jesus, may we humbly pay attention to the example of Jesus, and may we all be humbled by the salvation Jesus won for us.  My friends we couldn’t save ourselves, we had to be rescued by the work of Jesus, if that doesn’t humble us, I don’t know what will.

May God bless each of us, as we turn our hearts and our minds to our blessed Savior, Jesus Christ…Ben
